TITLE: Margaret Hardin Allen SOURCE: The New and Reporter, May 17, 2001 SUBMITTED: The News and Reporter FORMATTED: Kim Grissom, May 2001 *********************************************************************** Mrs. Margaret Hardin Allen, 89 WADESBORO, N.C. —The funeral for Mrs. Margaret Hardin Allen was conducted at 2 p.m. Monday at the First Baptist Church in Wadesboro. Burial followed in Eastview Cemetery. Mrs. Allen, 89, died Thursday, May 10, 2001, in Matthews, N.C. Born in Chester on Feb. 21, 1912, Mrs. Allen was a daughter of the late James I. and Daisy B. Hardin. She graduated from Winthrop University in 1933 with a degree in business law and was a leader of the Baptist Training Union at First Baptist Church, as well as GAs, RAs, Sunbeams Vacation Bible School and Boy Scouts. She taught a women’s Bible class for 34 years, served on the Board of Deacons at First Baptist Church and served on the General Board of the North Carolina State Baptist Convention. She prepared and delivered Christmas dinners to shut-ins, was a Meals-On-Wheels volunteer and was president of her church’s Missionary Union as well as being organizer of the Women’s Auxiliary of Anson County Hospital. She was awarded the Woman of the Year Award by the Anson County Chamber of Commerce and the Woodman of the World Honor Plaque for Outstanding Community Service. She also earned the State Hospital Auxiliary Super Volunteer Award and was a Paul Harris Fellow of Rotary International. Survivors include two sons, Dr. Fred H. Allen of Charlotte and Jim H. Allen of Asheboro; a daughter, Missy Allen Brown of Southern Pines; two sisters, Mrs. Jane H. Hankinson of Spartanburg and Mrs. Judy H. Lathram of Monroeville, Ala.; eight grandchildren and 13 great-grandchildren. She was predeceased by her husband, Mr. Fred Huntley Allen.Memorials may be made to the Fred H. Allen Scholarship at Wingate University, Wingate, NC 28174, or to First Baptist Church, 309 Lee Avenue, Wadesboro, NC 28170.
