Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m., Wednesday, in Carolina Memorial Funeral Home. Burial will follow in Carolina Memorial Gardens. Born in Jayess, Miss., he was the son of Lewis J. Beard and Elizabeth Thornhill Beard. Mr. Beard retired from the U.S. Navy as a Master Chief and was a veteran of World War II, and Korea. He was a member of the Charleston Dog Training Club, Past President of the North Charleston Lions Club, a member of the Fleet Reserve, the International Brotherhood of Electrical Workers and was Past President of the Manufactured Housing Institute of Charleston. He was a Mason, a member of the York Rite and Omar Temple. Survivors include his wife, Virginia Louise DeWitt Beard; step-daughters, Barbara Rose of Summerville, Joyce DeWitt of Hanahan, and Gina Burgess of Ridgeville; step-sons, Willie DeWitt and Gary DeWitt, both of Charleston; nieces, Betty Martin and Barbara Estave, both of Summit, Miss., Louise Thames of Monticello, Miss., Lynda Kyzar of Murfresboro, Tenn., and Julia Frazier of Kentwood, La.; a nephew, Raymond Kyzar of Jayess, Miss.; step-grandchildren, Jude Kitchens, Fallon Rose and Brian DeWitt. The family will receive friends from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m., Tuesday, May 29, 2001, at Carolina Memorial Funeral Home.
