Guffey Retired U.S. Air Force Col.Herman F. "Guff" Guffey, 80, of Beaufort, died Saturday, May 19, 2001, in Beaufort Memorial Hospital. Funeral arrangements will be announced by Copeland Funeral Home. (May 20, 2001 The Beaufort Gazette) Herman F. Guffey Retired U.S. Air Force Col. Herman F. "Guff" Guffey, 80, of Beaufort, died Saturday, May 19, 2001, in Beaufort Memorial Hospital. The family will receive friends from 6 to 8 p.m. Tuesday. Services will be at 11 a.m. Wednesday at The Baptist Church of Beaufort. Burial will be at the Beaufort National Cemetery with military honors. Col. Guffey was born Feb. 12, 1921, in Big Prarie, Ohio, a son of the late Rev. Lawrence Edward Guffey and Amanda Sayre Guffey. He attended Baldwin Wallace College in Clevelend and received his electrical engineering degree from the University of Illinois. He was a fighter pilot in World War II and the Korean War. He retired from the Air Force after 26 years of service and was employed for 15 years by Cessna Aircraft Company, Boontoon, N.J. He was a member of The Baptist Church of Beaufort, the Beaufort Little Theatre and a former member of the Bay Street Rollers barbershop group. Surviving are his wife, Margaret Gasbarek Guffey of Beaufort; a son, Richard L. Guffey of Lehigh Acres, Fla.; and a grandson. The family suggests that contributions be made to The Baptist Church of Beaufort Building Fund, P.O. Box 879, Beaufort, SC 29901.
