Eugene Able E. Eugene "Gene" Able, 60, of Georgetown, died Monday, May 28, 2001. Mr. Able was born June 9, 1940, in Ridgeland, a son of Jack L. Able and Lillie M. Collins Roberts. He attended schools in Jasper County and graduated from Ridgeland High School in 1958. He enlisted in the U.S. Army and served at Fort Sam Houston near San Antonio, Texas, and the 6432nd Supply Depot in Ingrandes, France. Mr. Able graduated cum laude from the University of south Carolina with majors in English and journalism and a minor in religion. He received his master's degree in journalism at Winthrop College. He was a journalist for more than 30 years, with stints at several newspapers. He was first managing editor at The Island Packet on Hilton Head Island, editor and publisher of The Lowcountry Sentinel and served for 13 years in the capacities of writer, outdoors editor, feature writer and columnist with The State newspaper in Columbia; editor and general manager of The Independent News in Irmo; and he was currently a report for the Coastal Observer, Pawley's Island. He was co-author of Paddling South Carolina; author Exploring South Carolina; short story, Marrying Aunt Sadie, published in New Stories from The South; and chief writer and editor of Irmo and the Dutch Fork Legacy. Surviving are a daughter, Michelle Able of Barnwell; three sisters, Priscilla B. Lyons of Yemassee, Jackie Able of West Columbia and Nickolas A. Withrow of Irmo. The family will receive friends from 6 to 8 tonight in Sauls Funeral Home, Ridgeland. Services will be at 3 p.m. Thursday at the funeral home, with burial in Ebenezer Cemetery, Yemassee. The family suggests those who wish may make memorials to Hospice of Georgetown County, 2591 N.
