TITLE: Charles Alexander Robb SOURCE: The Post and Courier, May 28, 2001 SUBMITTED: The Post and Courier FORMATTED: Kim Grissom, May 2001 *********************************************************************************************** Charles Alexander Robb, Retired Administrator of Roper Hospital, 81, of Charleston died Friday, May 25th at a local hospital. Born in Charleston to Dunbar and Frances Alexander Robb. He was a graduate of the High School of Charleston and the College of Charleston. He played on the basketball and tennis teams and was a member of the Alpha Tau Omega Fraternity. He was in the Navy and was commissioned an Ensign on graduation from an officers' training course at Columbia University, and then attended the Mine Warfare School at Yorktown, VA. He was executive officer and then commanding officer of YMS (yard minesweeper), and later was executive officer aboard auxiliary minesweepers. He retired in 1985 as Administrator from Roper Hospital after thirty-five years. Also in 1985, he was made an honorary life member of the Medical Society of South Carolina. The last person so honored at that time was honored in 1915. He was also an honorary member and past president of the South Carolina Hospital Association. He was a past president and member of the St. Andrews Society, a member of Grace Episcopal Church, the Rotary Club of Charleston, with 47 years of perfect attendance, the New England Society, past president and member of the Charleston Club, past member of the Carolina Yacht Club and the Country Club of Charleston. He is survived by his wife Virginia Ann Shingler Robb and a daughter, Frances Walker Robb of Philadelphia, PA. Visitation will be Monday from 6 PM to 8 PM at MCALISTER-SMITH FUNERAL HOME, Downtown Chapel, 150 Wentworth St. A graveside service will be Tuesday at 11 AM at Magnolia Cemetery. Honorary Pallbearers will be Furman and Roy Cole, Palmer Gaillaird, Jr., Herbert Wilcox, Hammond Bamberg and Warren Ripley. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to Grace Episcopal Church, 98 Wentworth St., Charleston, SC 29401 or to the SPCA, 3861 Leeds Ave, Charleston, SC 29405 ROBB, Charles ST.
