He was previously a resident of the Foothills Retirement Center in West Union. A native of Carnesville, Ga., he was a retired textile employee, a gunsmith, knife maker, and watch repairman. He was a member of College Street Baptist Church. He was the widower of Gussie Mac Manley Bentley, and the son of the late Larkin Harrison "LH" and Rillia Fulbright Bentley. Surviving are a son, Howard Bentley and wife Joan of Walhalla; daughters, Vernelle Vissage and husband Bill of Mountain Rest, and Mary Sloan of Walhalla; 15 grandchildren, 30 great grandchildren and 5 great great grandchildren. In addition to his wife and parents he was predeceased by a brother, Hoke Bentley; and sisters, Mary Jane Teague, Rachel Morgan and Blanche Bentley. He was the last surviving member of his immediate family. Services were at 11 am Wednesday at College Street Baptist Church, with burial in Oconee Memorial Park. Davenport Funeral Home was in charge of arrangements. Memorials may be made to the College Street Baptist Church Building Fund, PO Box 340, Walhalla, SC 29691.
