TITLE: Herbert Woods, Jr SOURCE: The Post and Courier, June 18, 2001 SUBMITTED: The Post and Courier FORMATTED: Kim Grissom, June 2001 *********************************************************************************************** WOODS, JR., Herbert Funeral service for the late Mr. Herbert DeWard Woods, Jr., will be held 2 p.m., on Tuesday, June 19, 2001, at the Jeremiah United Methodist Church of Hemingway. Interment will follow in the Devotional Memorial Garden Cemetery. Reverend J.P. Thomas will conduct the Religious Service. NESMITH-PINCKNEY FUNERAL HOME is in charge of arrangements. Mr. Woods entered into eternal rest on Wednesday, June 13, 2001, at New York Cornell Medical Center after an illness. Mr. Woods, son of the late Herbert DeWard and Pearline Mintz Woods, was born May 25, 1925, in Richmond, Va. He was educated at Wilson High School in Florence County. He later joined the United States Army in 1942, serving two terms. He was instrumental in establishing Sylvia's famous soul food restaurant in New York. Mr. Woods joined Abyssinian Baptist Church in New York City. He remained faithful to Jeremiah United Methodist Church. He was joined in holy wedlock to Sylvia Pressley. To this union four children were born, Van, Kenneth, Pedelia, and Crizette. Those who are left to cherish his memories are, his wife, Sylvia Woods of New York; two sons, Kenneth (Sylvia) Woods and Van (Brenda) Woods, both of New York; three daughters, Pedelia, Crizette, and Linda, all of New York; two sisters, Annette Bass of Virginia Beach, Va., and Bertha Donnelly Pressley of Hemingway, S.C.; one brother, Robert "Dock" Francis Donnelly; one additional sister-in-law, Louvenia Donnelly of Moncks Corner; two aunts, Cassie Thomas and Kathleen Woods, both of Timmonsville, S.C.; 17 grandchildren and three great grandchildren.
