The honorable Joseph Wright Twinam of Charleston, S.C., passed away on 
June 12, 2001. His funeral services will be held Monday, June 18, 2001,
at 11 o'clock in J. HENRY STUHR, INC., DOWNTOWN CHAPEL. Friends may 
call one half hour prior to service. A career Foreign Service Officer 
(1959-1985) and former U.S. Ambassador to Bahrain (1974-1976), he went 
on to serve as Deputy Assistant Secretary of State from 1979-1982. He 
retired from the State Department in 1985 after three years as Dean of 
the Foreign Service Institute. From 1985-1993 he served as 
Distinguished Visiting Professor at the Citadel in Charleston, S.C. He 
closed his second career as Adjunct Professor at Southern Methodist 
University from 1998-1999. Mr. Twinam was born July 11, 1934, in 
Chattanooga, Tenn., and was married to Janet Ashby of Parkersburg, 
W.Va., from 1959 until her death in 1997. A daughter, Courtenay Twinam 
Golden of Franklin, Tenn., and a son, Marshall Ashby Twinam of Dallas,
Texas, as well as half-sister, Virginia Twinam Smith of Atlanta, Ga., 
survives him. Memorial contributions may be made in memory of Joseph 
Twinam to the Charleston Museum for the Joseph Manigault House, 360
