TITLE: James Arthur Stewart SOURCE: The Post and Courier, June 13, 2001 SUBMITTED: The Post and Courier FORMATTED: Kim Grissom, June 2001 *********************************************************************************************** James Arthur Stewart, 82, a resident of Seabrook Island since 1980, died June 9, 2001 at Sandpiper Convalescent Center in Mt. Pleasant, SC after an extended illness. Mr. Stewart, born October 21, 1918 in Eastbourne, Sussex, England, was the son of John Stewart and Violet Gambell Stewart. After his childhood in East Kilbride, Scotland, his family settled in Stockbridge, Massachusetts, where he graduated from Williams High School. He attended the State University of New York at Albany and Oswego. Union College, Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute, and George Washington University. After teaching industrial arts several years in Schenectady, New York public schools, he was employed by General Electric. In 1978, he retired as a regional sales training manager and was retained as a consultantconducting sales management and training seminars for GE and several other firms. He was a teacher of the AARP Safe Driving Course, an ardent amateur golfer, and a member of the Club at Seabrook Island, the GE Senior Elfun Society, and the Island Choraliers. He served in many teaching and leadership roles in his church and community and especially enjoyed singing in his church choir and social dancing with his wife. Survivors include his wife of 58 years, Rose Butterly Stewart, two daughters, Kathryn Johnson (husband Bruce) of Dassel, Minnesota, Cynthia Thompson (husband The Rev. James) of Incline Village, Nevada, and a son, The Rev. J. Bruce Stewart of Annandale, Virginia, a sister Jean S. Barnes and a nephew Charles Barnes of the Richmond, Virginia area, three granddaughters and three great grandchildren. A burial Eucharist will be held at the church where he was a founding member. The Church of Our Saviour, 4416 Betsy Kerrison Parkway, Johns Island, on Friday, June 15 at 10:00AM. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to The Church of Our Saviour or the charity of choice.
