Former State Senator, J. Kenneth Rentiers, a prominent local attorney, husband of Kathryn Gianatos Rentiers, died Saturday, June 16, 2001, at a local hospital. He was 74. Born in Charleston on March 11, 1927, he was the son of the late John Whalen Rentiers and Estelle Simmons Rentiers. He graduated from Charleston High School, the College of Charleston and the University of South Carolina School of Law. He practiced law for 50 years on Broad Street. He also was vice president of Gray Line Sightseeing Tour Company for 25 years. He served as president of the Charleston County Bar Association and was a member of the American Bar Association, the South Carolina Bar Association, the South Carolina Trial Lawyers Association and the American Judicature Society. Mr. Rentiers served the City of Charleston as Municipal Judge and as Special Corporation Counsel. He was selected to the State Senate in 1968 and was a member of the Judiciary Committee. He also served as a Special Circuit Court Judge. He was a Navy veteran of World War II and a member of the LST Association. He was a lifetime member of both the College of Charleston Alumni Association and the Hibernian Society. He was one of the founders of the Cougar Club at the College of Charleston and remained an active member. He was a longtime active member of Grace Episcopal Church and served as Senior Warden. He also set up the first Hospice Corporation in Charleston. He is survived by his wife of 47 years, Kathryn Gianatos Rentiers, one son, J. Kenneth Rentiers, Jr., two daughters, Mrs. Sally Rentiers Young, and Mrs. Kathryn Rentiers Dewey; three grandchildren, Sally Kathryn Young, Kathryn Rentiers Young and Emily McMahon Young. Funeral services will be held at Grace Episcopal Church on Tuesday, June 19, 2001, at 3 o'clock. Interment, Magnolia Cemetery. Friends may call at the church between 4 and 6 o'clock, Monday, and at the residence between 6 and 8 o'clock. Arrangements by J. HENRY STUHR, INC., DOWNTOWN CHAPEL. In lieu of flowers, memorials contributions may be made to the Scholarship Fund of the College of Charleston Alumni Association, the Grace Church Garden of Remembrance or to the Coastal Crisis Chaplains Ministry.
