Davis Leon N. Davis, 84, of Beaufort, a brother of Lucille D. Culberson and LaVerne Gayles, died Thursday, June 7, 2001, in his residence. Marshel's Wright-Donaldson Home for Funerals, Beaufort, is in charge. (The Beaufort Gazette, June 8, 2001) Leon N. Davis Leon N. Davis, 84, of Beaufort, died Saturday, June 7, 2001, at his residence. Services will be at noon Tuesday at First African Baptist Church with burial with military honors in Beaufort National Cemetery. Mr. Davis was born April 17, 1917, in Beaufort, a son of Rev. Highland and Florie B. Davis. He was a 1936 graduate of Robert Smalls High School. He moved to Savannah and became an active member of the First African Baptist Church. He entered the U.S. Army during World War II and served in the Pacific Theater. He attended Lincoln University in Jefferson City, Mo., majoring in journalism. In 1952, he accepted a position on the advertising staff of the African-American newspaper, The Louisville Defender. He returned home to Beaufort earlier this year. Surviving are four sisters, Helen Williams of Lake View Terrace, Calif.; Gloria Dent of San Francisco, Calif.; Lucille Culberson and LaVerne Gayles of Beaufort.
