(The Beaufort Gazette, June 11, 2001) James Washington James "Soldier" Washington, 93, of St. Helena Island died Sunday, June 10, 2001, at Beaufort Memorial Hospital. A wake service will be held from 7 to 8 p.m. today at Orange Grove Baptist Church. The funeral will be at 1 p.m. Thursday at the church with burial in the Orange Grove Baptist Churchyard. Mr. Washington was born April 5, 1908, on St. Helena Island, a son of James D. Washington and Rosa Lee Rivers Washington. He attended the Penn School and joined Orange Grove Baptist Church, where he later became a president of the usher board and was a member of the Trustees Board. He retired after 37 years of civil service as a carpenter. He was preceded in death by his wife, Victoria Parker Washington. Survivors include two daughters, Mae Belk Johnson and Elouise Singleton, both of St. Helena Island; two sons, Harold Washington Sr. of St. Helena Island and James Demus Washington of Atlanta; a sister, Marie W. Green of Lady's Island; two brothers, Clarence Washington Sr. and Harry Simmons, both of St. Helena Island; nine grandchildren and eight great-grandchildren.
