Mr. Ray was born in Georgetown County near Andrews on November 16, 1914, son of the late Jessie James Ray, Sr., and Annie Carraway Ray. After retiring as a self-employed logger, he became an avid farmer and sold produce. Mr. Ray was a member of Happy Home Original Free Will Baptist Church. Hew as a former president of the Gapway Hunting Club and the John's Lake Hunting Club. Surviving are his wife of 65 years, Nellie Floyd Ray of Andrews; a son, Marion W. Ray of Port Arthur, Texas; three daughters, Janelle R. Gamble, Cynthia R. Ard, and Teresa R. McAlister, all of Andrews; a daughter-in-law, Glenda Rogers Ray of Andrews; an adopted daughter, Anne S. Howell of Andrews; a brother, Frank Ray of Andrews; four sisters, Lorene Radcliffe, Molly Tilton, and Minnie Anne Newton, all of Andrews, and Earline Tyler of Hemingway; six special Watford brothers-in-law and their wives; 16 grandchildren; 26 great grandchildren; and and great-great grandchild. Mr. Ray was predeceased by a son, Gene M. Ray; step-mother, Vermelle Johnson Ray; a brother, Sid Ray; two sisters, Sadie Wiggins and Maude Best; and two great grandsons, Justin Gamble and Dylan Graham. Funeral services will be Sunday afternoon, June 10, 2001, at 3 o'clock in Happy Home Original Free Will Baptist Church. Officiating will be the Rev. Earl Bittle and the Rev. Murray Powell. Burial will follow in Ivey Cemetery under the direction of the Andrews Chapel of MAYER FUNERAL HOME. The family will receive friends at Happy Home Original Free Will Baptist Church, Saturday evening, June 9, 2001, from 7 to 9 o'clock.
