Born in Charleston, S.C., he was the son of John William Hess and Lena Jutzler Hess. He attended Charleston schools. A veteran of the U.S. Navy in W.W.II, Mr. Hess was a salesman at Sears-Roebuck for many years, and he was retired from K-Mart Stores. He was a member of Charleston Lodge No. 242, B.P.O. Elks; a past president of Charleston Rifle Club; and a member of St. Paul's Lutheran Church, Mt. Pleasant. Mr. Hess is survived by his wife, Carolyn Albers Hess of Mt. Pleasant; a daughter, Donna H. Cumbee of Awendaw; a sister, Gertrude H. Rentz; and four grandchildren, Lisa, Jessica, Lee and Adam, all of Awendaw. Visitors may call between the hours of 6 and 8 p.m., Wednesday , June 13, 2001, at McAlister-Smith Funeral Home, Mt. Pleasant Chapel, 1520 Rifle Range Road. The relatives and friends are invited to attend his funeral service, 1 p.m., Thursday, June 14, 2001, at St. Paul's Lutheran Church, Mt. Pleasant. Burial will be in Mt. Pleasant Memorial Gardens.
