W. Leon Mortuary is in charge. (The Beaufort Gazette, June 7, 2001) Harris Byas Harris Byas, 69, of St. Helena Island, died Wednesday, March 6, 2001, at his residence. A wake service will be today from 7 to 8 p.m. at Ebenezer Baptist Church on St. Helena Island. The funeral is noon Monday at the church with burial in the Tom Fripp Cemetery. Mr. Byas was born March 9, 1932 in the John Fripp Hill community on St. Helena Island, a son of Carolina and Harold Byas and was married to Rosa Lee Byas. He was a member of Ebenezer Baptist Church and worked for 21 years as a carpenter's helper at MCAS Beaufort. Survivors include, seven daughters, Catherine Daise, Martha Singleton, Helen Byas, Janette Santiago and Annette Byas, all of St. Helena Island, Lillie Mae Francis of Big Estate and Edna Brazzell of Coatsville, Penn.; three sons, Harris Byas Jr. and Nathaniel Byas, both of St. Helena Island, end James Cooler of Freeport, Tex.; a sister, Rosa Chaplin of Jamaica, N.Y.; two brothers, James Byas Flushing of New York and Richard Simmons Sr. of St. Helena Island; 29 grandchildren and 10 great-grandchildren.
