The relatives and friends of Mr. and Mrs. William Lucas Gaillard are invited to attend the funeral services of the former, Saturday, June 16, 2001, at 3 o'clock in the French Huguenot Church. Interment, St. Philips Episcopal Churchyard. Friends may call at J. HENRY STUHR, INC., DOWNTOWN CHAPEL, Friday evening between 5 and 7 o'clock. Mr. Gaillard was born July 22, 1912, in Charleston, S.C., the son of John Palmer Gaillard and Eleanor Ball Lucas Gaillard. He was a member of the French Huguenot Church and St. Philip's Episcopal Church. He attended Charleston schools and received a bachelor's degree in civil engineering from Florida State Christian University. He was the longest licensed surveyor in South Carolina, having been certified by the State Board of Engineering Examiners in 1937. In 1939, he formed Gaillard and Gaillard, a surveying business with his father. Together, they surveyed most of the old plantations and large tracts of land in the Lowcountry. He taught surveying at the College of Charleston from 1940 to 1946, and he later wrote the surveying chapter in the Standard Handbook for Engineers. He was a member of the South Carolina Society of Land Surveyors and served as president of the Charleston Chapter of American Congress on Surveying and Mapping. He was a member of the St. Cecilia Society, St. Andrew's Society, South Carolina Society, the Charleston Club, Sons of Confederate Veterans, Carolina Yacht Club, and Agricultural Society. He served as Governor General, Governor, Lt. Governor and Deputy Governor of the Society of Colonial Wars. He served as Chairman of the Board of Stewards and Vice President of the St. John's Hunt Club. He has served as President of the Society of First Families of South Carolina. He was very active in the Huguenot Church and served as President of the Board of the Church. He served as president of the Huguenot Society of South Carolina, and at their annual meeting this year, the Huguenot Society presented him with the L'Esprit Huguenot Award. He was predeceased by his wife of 55 years, Daisy Williams Gaillard and his son, William Lucas Gaillard, Jr. He is also survived by two daughters, Mrs. Francis Drake Rogers, Jr., and Mrs. William Pettigrew Clare, both of Charleston, a brother, John Palmer Gaillard, Jr., six grandchildren and six great grandchildren.
