Born September 18, 1929, in Clarendon County, she was a daughter of the late Edward Louis Ard and the late Laura Gibbons Ard. She was a retired secretary, and a member of Santee Baptist Church. She was first married to the late James Carlyle Witherspoon, Sr. Surviving besides her husband of Manning, are two sons, James Carlyle Witherspoon, Jr., of Alcolu and John Edward Witherspoon of Manning; five sisters, Vera Rogers and Laura Barwick of N. Charleston, Onie Morris of Alcolu, Ann Hall of Pinewood, and Louise Leybourne of Dayton, Ohio; four grandchildren, John Edward Witherspoon, Jr., and Joy Witherspoon Kennard, Ashlee Marie Witherspoon, and Kellee-Morgan Witherspoon; a great grandchild, James Stephen Kennard. She was preceded in death by a daughter, Paula Lynn Witherspoon; a brother, Harvin Ard; and a sister, Marcelle Barwick. Funeral services will be held at 12 noon on Monday, June 25, 2001, in Stephens Funeral Home in Manning. Rev. Sim Smith will officiate. Burial will follow in Trinity United Methodist Church Cemetery. The family will receive friends from 3 to 5 p.m., Sunday, at Stephens Funeral Home, and at other times at the residence of John Edward Witherspoon, Country Club Circle, Manning.
