Carter CHESTER – The funeral for Mrs. Odessa M. Carter of 1760 Lowrys Road, Chester, will be conducted at 3 p.m. Wednesday, June 20 at Christian Home Baptist Church in Lowrys, with the Rev. Lloyd Reid officiating and assisted by the Revs. Daniel Chisolm, George Lowry, Winfrey Crosby and Otha L. Smith. Burial will follow in the church cemetery. Mrs. Carter will be placed in state at the church at 2:30 p.m. until the hour of service. Mrs. Carter died Friday, June 15, 2001 at Piedmont Medical Center in Rock Hill. Born in Chester County, she was the daughter of the late Janie Taylor and the late Garfield Murray. She was educated in Chester County public schools and joined Christian Home Baptist Church at an early age. There, she was a faithful and devoted member being the Past Mother of the Usher Board, Past Treasurer of the Senior Missionary, Past President of the Pastor Aide, and Past Mother of the Gospel Choir. She was married to the late Mr. Tommy Carter Jr. and the couple had 13 children. She was preceded in death by James Carter, Ronald Carter and Marshall Carter. She is survived by four sons: John (Mamie) Carter of Chester; Tommy III (Geraldine) Carter of Summersville ; the Rev. Donald (Darlene) Carter of Lowrys, Elijah (Cora) Carter of Chester; six daughters, Daisy (Heyward) Wylie of Chester; Janie Carter of the home, Brenda (Ronnie) McCleave of McConnells, Laverne Macon of Chester, Debra Carter of the home and Angela Johnson of Rock Hill; daughter-in-law Karna Carter of Dudley, N.C., 27 grandchildren and 29 great-grandchildren. The family will receive friends at the home.
