Atkinson, 75, husband of Nettie "Judy" Harrelson Atkinson, died Friday, June 15, 2001, at a Charleston hospital after an illness. Funeral services will be held at 4 p.m., Sunday, June 17, at Ariel Baptist Church. Burial, with Masonic Rites, will follow in Ariel Baptist Church Cemetery. The grandchildren of Mr. Atkinson will be serving as pallbearers. Mr. Atkinson was born March 10, 1926, in Brittons Neck, a son of the late Ebbie Johnson Atkinson and the late Carrie Bell Altman Atkinson. Mr. Atkinson was a farmer and had retired from the Fertilizer Inspection Department of Clemson University. Mr. Atkinson was a U.S. Army veteran of World War II, having served in the Pacific Theater. He was a member of the American Legion and the VFW. Mr. Atkinson was a graduate of Brittons Neck High School and attended the University of South Carolina. Mr. Atkinson was a strong supporter of public education in Marion County and he showed this support by serving on the Marion School District #3 Board of Trustees for 20 years and prior to that he had served on the Marion County Board of Education. He was also a member of the S.C. School Board Association. Mr. Atkinson served for many years as a Precinct Clerk for the Marion County Election Commission. Mr. Atkinson also had a longtime association with Daniel and Liberty Tobacco Warehouses. Mr. Atkinson was a member of Centenary Masonic Lodge #312, for over 50 years, where he had served as Past Master. Mr. Atkinson was a member of Ariel Baptist Church, where he was a member of the Adult Men's Sunday School Class, a former Deacon and had served as Church Treasurer for many years. Surviving Mr. Atkinson in addition to his wife of the home are, his children, Ebbie James "Jim" Atkinson, Jr., and his wife, Jacki of Charleston, Darlene A. Willis and her husband Frank of Marion, Ralph A. Atkinson and his wife Lynne of Marion and Don H. Atkinson and his wife Candace of Ariel Crossroads; his grandchildren, Jamie Atkinson, Jennifer Atkinson and Evan Atkinson, all of Charleston, Jay Willis and Jan Willis, both of Marion, E. Johnson Atkinson and Catherine Atkinson, both of Marion, D.C. Atkinson of Aiken and Dakota Atkinson and Chese Levy and Caylee Levy, all of Ariel Crossroads; his sisters, Ellen Friday of Winnsboro, Carrie Bell Sells of Knoxville, Tenn., Gladys Vinzani of Florence, and Pauline Edwards of Marion; and his brothers, John Q. Atkinson of Marion, Aldrich A. Atkinson of Clemson and William D. Atkinson of Mullins. Mr. Atkinson was predeceased by a brother, Francis W. "AT" Atkinson and a sister, Miriam Boulware. The family will receive friends Saturday evening from 7 til 9 p.m. at SMITH-COLLINS FUNERAL HOME.
