TITLE: John Oates Woods SOURCE: The New and Reporter, SUBMITTED: The News and Reporter FORMATTED: Kim Grissom, *********************************************************************** Mr. John Oates Woods, 91 ROCK HILL – The funeral for Mr. John Oates Woods of 624 Meadowbrook Lane will be conducted at 11:30 a.m. Tuesday, July 31 at First Presbyterian Church. The Rev. Dr. William Pender will officiate and burial will occur at 10 a.m. the day of the funeral at Evergreen Cemetery in Chester. Mr. Woods, 91, died Saturday, July 21, 2001, at Piedmont Medical Center. A native of Chester, Mr. Woods was a son of the late Auburn Woods Sr. and JoAnna Smith Oates Woods. He was a 1933 graduate of Presbyterian College, where he was on the track team, cheerleading squad and a member of the Kappa Alpha Fraternity and winner of the Blue Key Award. He graduated from the Georgetown University School of Law in 1937 and served in the U.S. Army during World War II in Washington, D.C., and retired from the U.S. Army Reserve in 1960 as Lt. Col. Mr. Woods moved to Rock Hill in 1947 and began the private practice of law. He was joined by his son, Henry T. Woods, in 1971 and continued to practice as a member of Woods and Woods Attorneys until his full retirement in 1999. He was a past member of the District of Columbia Bar, a member of the S.C. Bar and the York County Bar Association, where he served as a past president. An active member in community affairs, Mr. Woods served as president of the Community Chest, the predecessor of the United Way. He was a past president and active member of the Rock Hill Kiwanis Club for more than 40 years and was a member of Oakland Avenue Presbyterian Church, where he was a Sunday school teacher, a deacon, an elder and at the time of his death, a senior elder. Survivors include three sons, John O. Woods Jr. and Fred W. Woods, both of Alexandria, Va., and Henry T. Woods of Rock Hill; a daughter, Ann Woods Simpson of Rock Hill; two sisters, Joann Woods McMaster of Rock Hill and Juliet “Tootsie” Woods Jenkins of Sumter; four grandchildren, John O. Woods III, Margaret Rose Woods, Joseph McJunkin Saye Simpson and James Gaston Simpson Jr. He was preceded in death by his wife, Margaret Louise Wilkinson. The family will be at the home of Joe and Ann Woods Simpson, 626 Oakwood Lane, Rock Hill, S.C. 29730. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Oakland Avenue Presbyterian Church Sanctuary Renovation Fund, C/O Oakland Avenue Presbyterian Church, 421 Oakland Avenue, Rock Hill, S.C. 29730.
