Helen Galloway's Chisholm Funeral Home is in charge. (The Beaufort Gazette July 9, 2001) Mamie Whaley Mamie Whaley, 83, of St. Helena Island died Sunday, July 8, 2001. Services will be 11 a.m. today at First African Baptist Church on St. Helena Island with burial held in the church yard. Ms. Whaley was born February 6, 1918, on Edisto Island, a daughter of William Whaley and Sara Holmes Whaley. She lived in New York from 1937 until 1982 when she returned to South Carolina. She was educated at Seaside School on Edisto Island and was a member of First Baptist Church on Edisto Island and later, African Baptist Church on St. Helena Island. She retired after 30 years from Empire Bag. Co. of New York and was a member of the International Garment Labor Union. She was preceded in death by her husband, Clinton Watson. Survivors include a daughter, Celestine Mungin of St. Helena Island; an adopted brother, Benjamin Robinson of Bronx, N.Y.; a sister, Lillian Willis; 14 grandchildren and 13 great-grandchildren.
