She was the daughter of the late William and Ella Hemingway. She was a graduate of Whittenmore High School and matriculated to the Medical College Nursing School (Medical University of South Carolina), where she was in the first black graduating class. She was a nurse a Roper in Pediatrics for over 34 years. She was married to the late Ashley Lee Washington. Survivors include, two sons, Robert Edward Washington (Lillian), Ashley Leondro Washington; three daughters, Zandra V. Washington, Earlean A. Washington, Tredssa C. Washington, ten grandchildren, 11 great grandchildren, one sister, Earlease Hemingway, one brother, Jessie Hemingway (Maxine), four sisters-in-law. Funeral services will be held 11 a.m., Wednesday, from the Hemingway Chapel AME Church - Conway. Burial will follow in the Sunset Memorial Gardens, Charleston. Mrs. Washington's friends may call at MCKIEVER FUNERAL HOME, INC., of Conway, from 4 p.m., Tuesday, until the hour of services.
