Gene was born on January 27, 1938, in St. Stephen, S.C. He was a son of the late Archie Joshua and Pauline Smith. He was a graduate of the University of South Carolina. Mr. Smith retired after 30 years in the insurance business. He spent 20 of those years with Nationwide Insurance Offices in Mt. Pleasant and St. Stephen. Mr. Smith was a member of Heritage Presbyterian Church, the Exchange Club, and the Charleston Elks Club. He also served in the U.S. Marine Corps. Surviving are his wife of 39 years, Gaynelle Williamson Smith; two sons, Rhett Hopkins Smith of Charleston and Patrick Michael Smith and daughter-in-law, Heidi Sager Smith of Mt. Pleasant; a sister, Mrs. Henry (Betty) Bonner of Moncks Corner. The family will receive friends from 6 until 8 p.m. on Monday, July 9, 2001, in J. HENRY STUHR, INC., MT. PLEASANT CHAPEL. Funeral services will be held at the Heritage Presbyterian Church in Mt. Pleasant on Tuesday, July 10, 2001, at 11 a.m., followed by graveside services at the Mt. Pleasant Memorial Gardens. Memorials may be made to the American Cancer Society, 267 Calhoun St., Charleston, S.C. 29401, or the Bone Marrow Transplant Unit, Roper Hospital, 316 Calhoun St., Charleston, S.C. 29401.
