TITLE: Mary Jane Schwerdt SOURCE: The Post and Courier, June 12, 2001 SUBMITTED: The Post and Courier FORMATTED: Kim Grissom, June 2001 *********************************************************************************************** Mrs. Mary Jane Schwerdt peacefully passed away Friday, June 8, 2001, in Houston, Texas, after a courageous two-year battle with cancer. She was born June 1, 1922, in Altoona, the daughter of the late Leonard S. and Mary Edith (Wolfe) Chatham. She was the last surviving member of her immediate family. A sister Helen Stefula and two brothers Paul and Charles Chatham predeceased her. She was married in July, 1943, to Thomas W. Hagan who died July, 1960. Her beloved only child, Thomas P. Hagan, was killed in an accident in 1966. She married Retired Air Force Colonel David R. Schwerdt, January, 1977, in Charleston, SC. Col. Schwerdt passed away December, 2000. She is survived by her niece, Patricia Teufel and husband William, with whom she resided in Kingwood, Texas. She is also survived by a step-daughter, Lisa Blackmon and Lisa's two children, Lindsey and Michael of Summerville, SC; niece, Deborah Dambeck and husband James of Altoona; nephew, Joseph Stefula and wife Evelyn of Brownsville, NJ; nephew, Mickey Stefula, Yorktown, VA; as well as other nephews and nieces. She will especially be missed by her great niece and nephew, Christy and Billy Teufel, who considered her their third grandmother. She was a 1940 graduate of Altoona High School. Friends will be received from 9:30 a.m. to 10:30 a.m., Saturday, June 16, 2001, at the Daniel R. Myers Funeral Home. Funeral services will be held at 10:30 a.m., Saturday, at the funeral home by Father Edward Eckenrod. Entombment at Calvary Cemetery Mausoleum.
