Marshels' Wright-Donaldson Home for Funerals is in charge. Helen Sanford Helen Sanford, 100, of Beaufort, widow of Julius C. Sanford Sr., died Saturday, July 7, 2001, on St. Helena Island. The body will repose in Tabernacle Baptist Church, Beaufort, from 7 tonight until services on Wednesday. There will be no viewing after the eulogy. Services will be at 11 a.m. Wednesday in the church with burial in Mercy Cemetery, Beaufort. Mrs. Sanford was born Nov. 27, 1900, in Beaufort, a daughter of James and Elizabeth Mitchell Simmons. She was educated in Beaufort County public schools. She had been a lifelong member of Tabernacle Baptist Church where she was a Mother of the Church. She also served as a member of the Senior Usher Board and the Adelle Fleming Missionary Society. She was a member of the Woman's Relief Corps and Martha Chapter No. 20, Order of the Eastern Star. For many years she worked in the Sales House at Mather School and she worked at local Laundromats She was recognized on her 100th birthday by Beaufort Mayor Bill Rauch who proclaimed Nov. 27, 2000, Helen Sanford Day in recognition of her many years of work and for faithful work and dedication as a member of the Grand Army Hall, Woman's Relief Corps and participation in annual Memorial Day activities. At the age of 100, Mrs. Sanford was still walking to her job at the laundromat at Charles and Boundary streets, six days a week. She began working on Parris Island and eventually worked in Virginia and Florida before returning to Beaufort in 1942. She was preceded in death by a son, Theodore Nottingham, and a daughter Margaret Nottingham. Surviving are a daughter, Julia N. Brown of St. Helena Island; a son, Julius C. Sanford Jr. of Rockledge, Fla.; 10 grandchildren; and seven great-grandchildren; and six great-great-grandchildren.
