Lanford Road, Spartanburg, died Saturday, July 7, 2001, at his home after an extended illness.A life-long resident of Spartanburg County, he was the son of the late Fred and Aquilla Putnam Sams. He was a veteran of World War II, serving the Army National Guard in the European Theatre. He retired in 1983 from Southern Railway with 38 years of service, was a member of the Morningside Baptist Church where he had served as an Usher for over 15 years and was a member of the Royal Sunday School Class, and was also a member of Spartan Masonic Lodge #70.He was also preceded in death by two brothers, Ralph Sams and Fred Sams.Surviving are his wife of 56 years, Caroline Wood Sams of the home; two sons and daughters-in-law, Richard "Ric" and Lynn Sams of Tampa, Fla., Steven "Steve" and Kelly Sams of Mt. Pleasant, S.C. Four grandchildren, Ashley Brett, and Tracey, all of Tampa, Fla., and Caroline of Mt. Pleasant, S.C.; one brother, Joe Sams of Charlotte, N.C.; two sisters, Frances Sams Waldrop of Tryon, N.C., and Mary Sams Hines of Spartanburg; several nieces and nephews.Graveside services will be held Monday, July 9, at 11 a.m. at the Greenlawn Memorial Gardens, conducted by Dr. Kirk H. Neely.The family will receive friends following the service at the graveside.Members of the Royal Sunday School will serve as Honorary Pallbearers.In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the Building Fund of the Morningside Baptist Church, 897 South Pine St., Spartanburg S.C. 29302, or to Hospice Care of South Carolina, 324 North Pine St., Spartanburg, S.C. 29302.The family will be at the home at 309 S.
