Newton, 81, retired owner and manager of Piggly Wiggly Walterboro, Inc., died Monday at a Walterboro hospital. Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m., Wednesday, in the chapel of FRED PARKER FUNERAL HOME, conducted by Rev. Posey Belcher and Rev. Steve Brown. Interment will be in Greenlawn Memorial Gardens. Mr. Newton was born October 25, 1919, in Rocky Ford, Ga., a son of the late Joseph Turner Newton, Sr., and Florence Johnson Newton. He was a member of First Baptist Church, Elks Lodge, American Legion, Lions Club, Dogwood Hills Country Club and Walterboro Chamber of Commerce. He was a former Walterboro City Councilman and chairman of the Walterboro Downtown Development Corp. He was an Army veteran of World War II. Surviving are, his wife, Dorothy Iler Newton, two sons, Joseph Michael Newton of Miami, Fla., and Dan A. Newton, Jr., of Edisto Island, a daughter, Sylvia N. Rowland of Walterboro, a brother, Robert B. Newton of Jacksonville, Fla., five grandsons and two granddaughters. Nieces and nephews also survive. Memorials may be made to Colleton County Memorial Library, 600 Hampton St., Walterboro, S.C. Visitation will be held Tuesday, from 6 until 8 p.m., at the Fred Parker Funeral Home.
