(The Beaufort Gazette July 10, 2001) John McDowell McElrath Jr. GRIFFIN,Ga. -John McDowell McElrath Jr, 72, of Fripp Island and Griffin, Ga., died Monday, July 9, 2001, at his residence. Graveside services will be at 2 p.m. Friday at the Beaufort National Cemetery. Mr. McElrath was born December 23, 1928, in Macon, Ga., a son of John M. and Elizabeth Mercer McElrath. He was a 1951 graduate of the Georgia Institute of Technology where he was a member of SAE fraternity. He was the former president of McElrath-Stewart Lumber Company and was president of Elkco Inc., Griffin, until his retirement in 1996. He was a member of St. George's Episcopal Church in Griffin and was a member of the Griffin Rotary Club and the Macon Civic Club. Surviving are his wife, Susan Ellzey McElrath of Fripp Island and Griffin; two daughters, Lisa Wooten and Ellen Duggan of Macon; two sons, John M. McElrath III and Jay M. McElrath of Macon; a sister, Ann M. Stewart of Macon; and seven grandchildren. Copeland Funeral Home is in charge.
