Gaines Harrell Mason, died Monday, July 9, in Spartanburg, S.C. The funeral will be at 10 a.m., Thursday, at the Pine Grove Baptist Church #1 near Walterboro. Interment will follow in the Live Oak Cemetery. The family will receive friends at the FRED PARKER FUNERAL HOME on Wednesday from 6 to 8 p.m. Mrs. Mason was born in Ruffin and was a daughter of Hansford Duncan Padgett and Lilly Thomas Padgett. She was a graduate of the Ruffin School System and Winthrop College in Rock Hill. She studied library science at the University of South Carolina. During her husband's ministry, she was active in many phases of church work. She was well known as his faithful partner in the ministry. She has been both an organist and a pianist in the churches her husband served. She was director of Women's Missionary Union in three associations, Savannah River Association, Lexington Association, and Colleton Association. Her published writings appeared in church bulletins that were used throughout the Southern Baptist Convention. Church members also enjoyed her flower arranging skills. Mrs. Mason was a former public school teacher and librarian. She retired as a librarian from the Colleton County School System. She was a member of the Pine Grove Baptist Church #1, Walterboro. Survivors are a son and daughter-in-law, Gaines Harrell and Jane Mason, Spartanburg; two daughters and sons-in-law, Mary Beth and Ed Brown, Athens, Ga.; Kathleen and Bill Bryan, Cleveland, Ga.; three grandchildren, and one great-grandchild. Memorials may be made to Pine Grove Baptist Church #1, 99 Pine Grove Road, Walterboro, S.C. 29488.
