He was born May 22, 1930, in Portsmouth, N.H., the son of the late William Langley and Madelyn Munce Langley Gamester. He attended Suffield Academy and Yale University, both in Connecticut. Participating in many sports, he set New England track and field records. He served in the U.S. Navy and the U.S. Coast Guard. After teaching at Cornwall Academy, he spent much of his writing career in Maine. He covered the war in Viet Nam, political and environmental issues and received awards for his reporting at the Portland Press Herald. He also wrote for the Maine Times, the Palm Beach Times and other publications. He valued knowledge, writing, books, music, and nature. He was a member of the Charleston Library Society, the South Carolina Historical Society, the National Trust for Historic Preservation, the Nature Conservancy and Disabled American Veterans.Surviving are his wife of 30 years, Lynn S. Langley of Adams Run; one brother, Rob Gamester of Tampa, Fla.; one sister, Judy G. Ruth of Tiger, Ga.; two sons, Ethan S. Langley of Idaho Falls, Idaho, and Currier Langley of Maine; one daughter, Sara Langley DeCasta of Portland, Maine, and three grandchildren.
