TITLE: William Howard Keeling SOURCE: The Post and Courier, July 14, 2001 SUBMITTED BY: The Post and Courier FORMATTED BY: Kim Grissom, July 2001 *********************************************************************************************** CONWAY - William Howard Keeling, age 59, of Hwy. 701 South, died Thursday, July 12, 2001, at his residence, following an illness. Mr. Keeling was born in Sturgis, Ky., a son of the late Isaac N. and Louise Jones Keeling. He was a member of Union United Methodist Church and served on the Church Administrative Board. He was a former member of the Horry County Literacy Council. Mr. Keeling graduated from the University of Kentucky, receiving a BA in 1963 and MA in 1966. He received his Ph.D from the University of Georgia in 1972. Between 1966 and 1970 he taught Anthropology at the Unviersity of Western Kentucky and in 1972 accepted the position of Assistant Professor of Anthropology at the College of Charleston and worked there until 1979. In 1979, Mr. Keeling accepted the position of Director of new Horry County Museum in Conway and successfully opened the museum to the public in 1981. His distinguished career has directed the museum for over 20 years and has generated numerous awards for the museum's programs and presentations. He worked as Historical Advisor with the Chicora-Waccamaw Tribe and has been awarded the title of Honorary Tribal Member from the Chicora-Waccamaw People. Mr. Keeling was an active member of the Conway Rotary Club, where he served as president. Surviving are, his wife, Ann Keeling of Conway; one son, Bobby Simmons of Surfside Beach; one daughter, Johanna Simmons of Conway; one granddaughter, Brittany Simmons of Hemingway; one brother, James H. Keeling of Cadis, Ky.Funeral services will be held 4 p.m., Sunday, from Union United Methodist Church with the Rev. Don Stiens officiating . Burial will follow in the church cemetery, directed by GOLDFINCH FUNERAL HOME, CONWAY CHAPEL. The family will receive friends from 6 to 8 p.m., Saturday, at the funeral home.Memorials may be sent to Union United Methodist Church, 4491 Hwy. 701 S., Conway, S.C. 29527.
