Dr. Theodore E. Jones, residence, Charleston, S.C., a retired United Methodist Minister, who held many positions of influence and responsibility in the South Carolina United Methodist Church, died on Friday at a Charleston hospital.His career included chairing the committee to write the first health insurance policy for S.C. Methodist ministers. While serving on the Commission on World Service and Finance for the period 1961-1968, he was Secretary (1961-1964) and Chairman (1964-1968). Other assignments included Board of the Ministry (1968-1972), Chairman of the Sermon Committee, Secretary to the Bishop's Cabinet (1958-1961), and Secretary of the S.C. Methodist Board of Education (1952-1956).He was the organizing District Superintendent for St. Luke's United Methodist, Hartsville; Aldersgate United Methodist Church, Sumter; and was instrumental in organizing North Myrtle Beach United Methodist Church.Other service responsibilities were Trustee for Wofford College for the period 1956-1961; Delegate to the World Methodist conference in 1970; and First Secretary of the Association of Retired Minsters of S.C., 1980-1981.Among the churches he served as pastor were Trinity United Methodist in Charleston, First United Methodist in Myrtle Beach, St. Paul United Methodist in Orangeburg, Grace United Methodist in North Augusta, and St. John's United Methodist in Anderson.Born in Fork, S.C. , he graduated from Wofford College with a B.A. in 1934, Duke University with a B.D. in 1939, and received an honorary D.D. degree from Wofford College in 1964.Dr. Jones is survived by his wife, Mary Elizabeth Jones; his daughter, Elizabeth Savage; and son, Theodore E. Jones, Jr.Services will be held in Bethany Methodist Church, Summerville, S.C., at 3 o'clock, on Monday, July 2, 2001. Friends and family may call at J.
