James E. James, died Tuesday in a Georgetown hospital. Mrs. James was born in Charleston County, a daughter of the late Joseph William Smoak and Lilly Chaplin Smoak. She was a graduate of Mars Hill Junior College, College of Charleston and received her Masters degree at Appalachian State University. Mrs. James retired after 27 years of teaching elementary school. She was a member of Kingstree First Baptist Church, where she sang in the choir for many years, and was a past president of the Kingstree Music Club. She was a former member of Citadel Square Baptist Church and its choir, a former associate Training Union Director of the Charleston Baptist Association and was a former State President of the Business Women's W.M.U. Surviving are, her daughter, Eva J. (Gene) Black of Kingstree, one granddaughter, Angela M. Hancock of Surfside Beach, two great granddaughters, Margaret Elizabeth Hancock and Emily Kathleen Hancock, both of Surfside, a brother, Joseph Arnold Smoak of San Antonio, Texas, a sister, Jerri S. Wilson of Deland, Fla. Funeral services will be 3 p.m., Thursday, in the Kingstree First Baptist Church, with burial in Kingstree Memorial Gardens, directed by WILLIAMSBURG FUNERAL HOME.
