Benton Ben Harvey was born in South Bend, Indiana, September , 18, 1924. He attended Central High School, South Bend, Indiana, class of 1942. He graduated from Purdue University in 1945 with a Bachelor of Science in Mechanical Engineering. In 1945 he was captain of the Purdue University track team competing in the 60, 100 and 220 yard dash. Ben Harvey joined the Navy Reserve Program at Purdue and served in the United States Navy during World War II.He had a 25 year career with The Bendix Corporation, a major auto supplier and was general manager of Fuel Devices in Detroit during the last six years of his Bendix career. After early retirement from Bendix he spent 12 years wit the Detroit Economic Growth Corporation (DEGC), a private/non-profit exonomic development organization, assisting small and medium sized firms in the city. After retiring from the DEGC he managed businesses in trust for the National Bank of Detroit. In 1998, Ben Harvey moved with his wife to Charleston in November 1998 where he immediately felt welcomed. He joined the Rascals II, a senior golfing group, and served on the Board of Directors of the Charleston Symphony Orchestra. In these groups he found himself surrounded by new friends and an old friend from this Purdue fraternity. Ben Harvey died peacefully at home on July 12, 2001 from complications of cancer. He leaves his wife, Barbara Tilley, Ph.D., Chair of the Department of Biometry and Epidemiology at the Medical University of South Carolina; his son Bill, Secretary/Treasurer of the Communications Workers of America of Oakland, California; his daughter, Ann Woodman of Beverly Hills, Michigan, an owner of the Knitting Room in Birmingham, Michigan; and three grandchildren, Emily McClaren and Geoff and Peter Woodman. He also leaves two stepsons, Steven and Jeffery Campbell of Maryland. Funeral services will be held on Sunday, July 15, 2001 at the Second Presbyterian Church, 342 Meeting St., at 3 o'clock. Friends may call at J. HENRY STUHR, INC., DOWNTOWN CHAPEL Saturday evening between five and seven o'clock. Interment will take place on July 17, 2001 at 2 o'clock in St. Joseph's Valley Memorial Park, Granger, Indiana. Funeral services will also be held in Michigan in Birmingham Unitarian Church.
