Guthridge, USNR, 91, died Friday, July 27, 2001, at a Beaufort hospital.Memorial services will be Monday, July 30, at 10 a.m., at the First Presbyterian Church. Interment, directed by COPELAND FUNERAL HOME, will be at 3 p.m., in the Harmony Presbyterian Churchyard, Crocketville.Captain Guthridge was born April 30, 1910, in Chicago, Ill., a son of the late Clay J. and Mabel Wetzell Guthridge. He attended White Plains High School in New York and the University of Florida where he was a member of Phi Delta Theta fraternity. He was commissioned in the U.S. Navy in 1942 and served on active duty for three years during World War II, including duty in the amphibious forces in the Southwest Pacific. He was active in the Naval Reserve, retiring in 1970. In his civilian career, he was a construction engineer with the Public Buildings Administration, the Federal Housing Administration, and the Veterans Administration in Washington, D.C., retiring in 1971. He and his wife then moved to Pleasant Point, Lady's Island, Beaufort, S.C. He was a past president of the Lowcountry Chapter of the Retired Officers Association. He was a founding member and past president of the South Carolina Coastal Seniors Golf Association and a member of the Thursday Club.Surviving are, his wife, Nancy Gooding Guthridge of Beaufort; three sons, Guy Guthridge of Washington, D.C., Clay Guthridge of Arlington, Va., and John Guthridge of Ft. Lauderdale, Fla.; one sister, Betty G. Duryee of Federal Way, Washington; one brother, Robert D. Guthridge of Sun City Center, Fla.; four grandchildren, and two great-grandchildren.The family suggests that contributions be made to the First Presbyterian Church, P.O.
