Gregory Carrie S. Gregory, 79, of the Oaks community, St. Helena Island, died Sunday, July 1, 2001, at her residence. W. Leon Sherman Mortuary is in charge. (The Beaufort Gazette July 2, 2001) Carrie Singleton Gregory Carrie Singleton Gregory, 79, of St. Helena Island died Sunday, July 1, 2001, at her residence. Services will be at 11 a.m. Friday at Bethesda Temple of St. Joseph Church, St. Helena Island with burial in Beaufort National Cemetery. A wake service will be held from 7 to 8 tonight at the church. Mrs. Gregory was born October 27, 1921, in the Cedar Grove community of St. Helena Island, and was a daughter of Frances Singleton and Stephen James. She attended Cedar Grove Community School and Penn Normal and Industrial School and received her high school diploma in 1973. She received her Nurses Aide license in New York City and was a member of the Bethesda Temple of St. Joseph Church, St. Helena Island. She married Wendell P. Gregory in 1953 and the couple renewed their vows in 1973. Survivors include her husband; five daughters, Marie Cleveland Price and Carrie Mae Warren of New York; Edith Cohen and Cynthia "Wendy" Gregory-Smalls of St. Helena Island and Marlena Gregory of New York; two stepdaughters, Sheila Edwards and Penny Mention, both of New York; a stepson, Wendell Gregory Jr. of St. Helena Island; 19 grandchildren; 28 great-grandchildren and two great-great-grandchildren.
