Thomas "Punchy" Erwin died Friday, July 27, 2001, at St. Luke's Hospital in Bethlehem, Pa. He was 74.Born in New Brunswick he had lived in North Brunswick, Florida, and South Carolina before moving to Hellertown, Pa., four years ago.He was an electrician for the International Brotherhood of Electrical Workers, Local #456 in New Brunswick for 40 years before retiring in 1987. He was also the North Brunswick Township building, fire and electrical inspector from 1969 to 1979. He served as zoning officer in Hollywood, S.C., after his retirement.Mr. Erwin was a veteran of the U.S. Marine Corps and the Merchant Marines serving during World War II.He was a life member, chief and former president of North Brunswick Volunteer Engine Company #1, had served as the township fire chief and chief of the township's underwater search and rescue team. He was also chief of the Lincolnville, S.C., Fire Department and a member of the N.J. State Volunteer Firemen's Association.He was a member of the Church of Jesus Christ of the later Day Saints in East Brunswick.Surviving are his wife Margaret Hayes Erwin; two daughters, Patricia Erwin of Lyme, N.H., and Nancy Hallum of Hellertown, Pa.; a son, John T. Erwin of Holland Township; a sister, Nancy Lakat of Bradentown, Fla.; and five grandchildren.Funeral services will be 11 a.m., Wednesday at SELOVER FUNERAL HOME, 555 Georges Road, North Brunswick. Cremation will follow at Franklin Memorial Park, North Brunswick. Friends and relatives may call at the funeral home, Tuesday, from 2 to 4 p.m. and 7 to 9 p.m. In lieu of flowers, contributions can be made to the N.J. State Firemen's Home, 565 Lathrop Ave., Boston, N.J. 07005.
