Residence, 2738 Bonds Ave., North Charleston, S.C. Well known throughout the Lowcountry and much of the United States for her active role in operating the infamous Jenkins Orphanage with her late husband, Rev. John E. Dowling, Sarah F. Dowling died on Saturday morning, July 21, 2001, at a Charleston hospital.Her career in Jenkins Orphanage, currently known as Jenkins Institute for Children, covered more than 60 years. She began as secretary for the founder, Rev. D.J. Jenkins and also served as matron for the boys and girls, spokesperson for appeals and choir director.Mrs. Dowling was a member of the first team of the Department of Welfare, a division of President Franklin Roosevelt's New Deal Plan. She was a librarian at several Charleston County Schools. However, her most beloved tenure was librarian at Dart Hall Library. She was a graduate of Charleston's Avery Normal Institute and Allen University in Columbia, S.C.Mrs. Dowling performed in several productions of the opera, Porgy and Bess, and various television productions. She appeared in documentaries for SCETV and local television commercials. She had a role in the very first Roper Care Alliance commercial and also First Federal of Charleston. She performed with the Mount Zion AME Church Spiritual Singers for the Spoleto Festival USA for several years.Mrs. Dowling was an active member of Mount Zion AME Church and was affiliated with Mother Emmanuel and New Tabernacle Fourth Baptist Church.In lieu of flowers, you are asked to make contributions to the Sarah Finley Dowling Memorial Scholarship Fund, c/o First Federal Bank of Charleston, Broad Street, Charleston, S.C. 29401. This fund will award scholarships to individuals choosing to specialize in Oncology/ Hematology, Internal or the Pulmonary Critical Care medical fields. Contributions will also be made to Jenkins Institute for Children, the Willing Workers, the Brown, Corbin, Dowling Missionary Society, H.G. Simpson Education Commission and the five year plan of Mount Zion AME Church. The Memorial Scholarship Fund is registered as a South Carolina non-profit organization. The principal officers are, Rev. Friends may call in the Chapel at HARLESTON-BOAGS, INC. on Tuesday afternoon July 24, 2001 from 1 until 5 pm Mrs. Dowling will repose in Mt. Zion Church from 6 until 7pm.
