Canfield Retired U.S. Marine Corps Sgt. Major Fredrick G. Canfield, 66, of Beaufort, husband of Anne Giroux Canfield, died Tuesday, July 10, 2001, in Beaufort Memorial Hospital. Anderson Funeral Home, Beaufort is in charge. (THe Beaufort Gazette July 11, 2001) Fredrick G. Canfield Retired U.S. Marine Corps Sgt. Major Fredrick G. Canfield, 66, of Beaufort, husband of Anne Giroux Canfield, died Tuesday, July 10, 2001, in Beaufort Memorial Hospital. The family will receive friends from 6 to 8 tonight in Anderson Funeral Home. Services will be at 10 a.m. Friday in the funeral home. Burial with full military honors and Masonic rites will follow in Beaufort National Cemetery. Mr. Canfield was born Feb. 3, 1935, in Clarksburg, W.Va. He enlisted in the U.S Marine Corps in February 1952. His tours of duty included all four Marine Divisions including four combat tours a tour with the First Marine Airwing, Marine Barrack, I&I Staffs, Marine Corps Base Camp LeJeune; MCDEC, Quantico, Va. and three tours of duty at Marine Corps Recruit Depot, Parris Island. He held billets from junior drill instructor to depot sergeant major. He was awarded the Bronze Star with Combat "V"; Meritorious Service Medal; Navy Com­mendation Medal with Combat "V"; Vietnam Cross of Gallantry with Bronze Star; Good Conduct Medal-10th Award; Presidential Unit Citation with three stars; Army Presidential Unit Citation with Frame; Navy Unit Citation with Star; Meritorious Unit Citation with Star; Korean Service Medal; United Nations Service Medal; Vietnam Service Medal with Seven Stars and numerous other service awards. He retired in 1982 as the depot sergeant major at MCRD, Parris Island. He was a member of Port Royal Masonic Lodge, AmVets Post No. 70, Parris Island Golf Course and Parris Island Rod and Gun Club. Surviving are his wife of Beaufort; five sons, Fredrick Steven Canfield of Silver Spring, Md., Nicholas Canfield of Mechanicsburg, Pa., Fredrick W. Canfield, Ricky A. Canfield and Randy L. Canfield of Beaufort; a daughter, Deborah Canfield Barr of Beaufort; eight grandchildren; and a great-grandchild.
