He was the retired manager of Johns Island Beverage. He was a member of Faith Lutheran Church. He was a member of Fidelity Lodge #304, the Scottish Rite, and the Omar Shrine. He graduated from the High School of Charleston. Surviving are his wife, Lyn Benton of Wadmalaw Island, S.C.; his mother, Grace Whitfield of Charleston; one daughter, Melissa Catherine Benton of Wadmalaw Island, S.C.; one sister, Joann E.
