Paul Behr, monk of the Trappist Abbey of Our Lady of Mepkin, died peacefully in the Lord. Born April 6, 1915 of the late Thomas Behr, Sr., and Luisa Bertha Wiesendanger Behr of Andermatt, Switzerland, he was one of nine siblings. He is survived by two sisters and a brother, Mary Hable, Ann Kalin and Emil Behr of the St. Paul, Minnesota area to which the family moved from Switzerland in 1921. Bro. Paul graduated from Maryknoll College in Clarks Summitt, Pennsylvania in 1937, after which he entered the Maryknoll novitiate at Bedford, MA. For reasons of health, he returned home to work on the family farm. On September 22, 1941, he entered the Trappist Abbey of Gethsemani near Bardstown, Kentucky. He made solemn profession at Gethsemani on April 13, 1947. Two years later , he was part of the group of monks sent to Moncks Corner, SC., to establish the new monastery of Our Lady of the Immaculate Heart, now known as Mepkin Abbey. While at Mepkin, he fulfilled the duties of cook , cobbler, assistant to the infirmarian and other tasks he was called on to do. At his passing, Bro. Paul was the senior monk in the community and would have been in the monastic life for 60 years this September. The Funeral Mass of the Resurrection will be celebrated at Mepkin on Saturday at 3:00 P.M., with the interment in the monastic cemetery following immediately.
