Rosa Maggie Jenkins Frazier (The Beaufort Gazette July 25, 2001) Theodore Roosevelt Alston Jr. RIDGELAND - Theodore Roosevelt Alston Jr., 65, died Tuesday, July 24, 2001, in Beaufort Memorial Hospital. Visitation will be from 7 to 8 p.m. Friday in Sauls Funeral Home, Ridgeland. Services will be at 3 p.m. Saturday in The Baptist Center with burial in Grahamville Cemetery. Mr. Alston was born June 11, 1936, in Ridgeland, a son of Theodore R. Alston Sr. and Viola Cochran Alston. He was an auto mechanic for Malphrus Construction Co. He was a member of St. Paul Baptist Church, Coosawatchie. He was a well-known semi-pro baseball player who was recruited by the Milwaukee Braves in 1956, and hit by a foul ball which blinded his right eye. In 1958, he formed Ridgeland Star which played in the S.C. Independent League. He later formed and managed the Ridgeland Red-Sox which played in the Georgia-South Carolina Semi Pro League. He was the first welder hired by Smith Ford in Ridgeland. He was a veteran of the U.S. Air Force. Survivors include his wife, Irene H. Alston of Ridgeland; six sons, Joseph Alston of Detroit, Anthony, Henry and Turtle Alston and Darryl Heyward of Ridgeland and Albert Young of Philadelphia; four daughters, Tanya, Gwendolyn and Patricia Alston of Ridgeland and Viola Alston of Columbia; three brothers, Nathaniel Alston of Ridgeland, James Alston of Tucker, Ga., and Robert Alston of Philadelphia; a sister, Mary Johnson of Philadelphia; 27 grandchildren and a great-grandchild.
