He was the son of the late Jack L. Able and Lillie M. Collins Roberts. After high school he enlisted in the U.S. Army, took basic training at Fort Jackson near Columbia, S.C., and was then posted to Fort Slocum, N.Y., to attend the U.S. Armed Forces Information School, where, among other things, he studied journalism. While in the Army, he served at Fort Sam Houston near San Antonio, Texas, and the 6432nd Supply Depot in Ingrandes, France. He graduated cum laude from the University of South Carolina with majors in English and journalism and a minor in religion. He received his masters in journalism at Winthrop College, S.C. He has been a journalist for more than 30 years with stints at several newspapers. He was the first managing editor of The Island Packet on Hilton Head Island, editor and publisher of The Lowcountry Sentinel and served for 13 years in the capacities of sports writer, outdoors editor, feature writer and columnist with The State newspaper in Columbia; editor and general manager of The Independent News in Irmo, S.C., and he was presently a reporter for the Coastal Observer in Pawley's Island, S.C. He was co-author of Paddling South Carolina; author of Exploring South Carolina; short story published in New Stories From The South - "Marrying Aunt Sadie"; and chief writer and editor of Irmo and The Dutch Fork Legacy. He is survived by his daughter, Michelle Able of Barnwell, S.C.; and three sisters, Priscilla B. Lyons of Yemassee, S.C., Jackie Able of West Columbia, S.C., and Nickolas A. Withrow of Irmo, S.C. Funeral services will be held at 3 p.m., Thursday, in the Sauls Funeral Home Chapel in Ridgeland, S.C., with burial in the Ebenezer Cemetery in Yemassee, S.C.
