TITLE: Robert Cathcart Smith SOURCE: The Post and Courier, Jan 3, 2001 SUBMITTED: The Post and Courier FORMATTED: Kim Grissom, Apr 2001 *********************************************************************************************** Murrells Inlet - Dr. Robert Cathcart Smith, age 86, of Creek Drive, died Monday, January 1, 2001, at his home. Born November 9, 1914, in Mullins, SC, he was the son of the late Henry Stacy and Adele Smith. Dr. Smith was a 1935 graduate of the Citadel, a 1939 gradate of the Duke University School of Medicine and continued his training at Baltimore City Hospital. He seved in the U.S. Army Medical Corp from 1941 until 1945. Dr. Smith moved to Conway in 1947 and founded Conway in 1947 and founded Conway Internists and retired from there in 1985. Dr. Smith then founded a free medical clinic known as Smith Medical Clinic at Baskervill Ministries, Pawleys Island. He was a founder of Coastal Carolina College in 1954 and served as first chairperson of the Costal Educational Foundation. He was a member and former chairperson of the S.C. Commissionof Higher Education. Dr. Smith served on numerous charitable organizations and received the Order of Palmetto from Gov. John West. He served on the board of Directors of Conway National Bank. Dr. Smith was a member of Holy Cross Faith Memorial Episcopal Church at Baskervill. Surviving are his wife of 61 years Nancy Arthur Smith; son, Robert C. Smith, Jr., and wife Martha Conway; daughters, Susanne S. Nash and husband, John of Columbis, Rebecca S. Lovelace of Conway and husband Richard and Gretchen M. Smith of Columbia; eight grandchildren; one great grandson and brother, Nathaniel E. Smith of Mullins. The family will receive friends from 4-7 p.m., Wednesday at the home of Bobby Smith, 305 Lakeland Dr., Conway. Services will be 4:30 p.m., Thursday at All Saints Episcopal Church, Pawleys Island, with Rev. Tommy H. Tipton and Rev. Alan Houghton officiating. Graveside services will be private.
