TITLE: Irving Williams Tourtellot SOURCE: The Post and Courier, August 3, 2001 SUBMITTED BY: The Post and Courier FORMATTED BY: Kim Grissom, August 2001 *********************************************************************************************** TOURTELLOT, Irving Irving Williams Tourtellot, age 87, of Bermuda Village in Advance, NC., formerly of Greenville SC., and Charlotte, NC., died July 27, 2001 at a local hospital in Winston-Salem, NC., after a brief illness. Born April 25, 1914 in Hope Mills, NC., Mr. Tourtellot was the son of the late Carl Thurston & Irene Laraway Tourtellot. He was also preceded in death by his sister, Jeanne Tourtellot Currier. Mr. Tourtellot spoke many times of his pride in the members of his ancestral, his immediate, and his extended family. Survivors include his beloved wife of almost 69 years, Louise Bentz Tourtelllot; sons and daughters-in-law, Robert Chester and Janet Graven Tourtellot, William Lawrence and Sandra Queen Tourtellot of Charlotte, NC; three grandchildren and six great-grandchildren. In addition, Mr. Tourtellot is survived by three brothers, Carl Thurston Tourtellot, Jr., of Greenville, SC., Richard Chester Tourtellot of Hampton, NH., and Raymond Bernon Tourtellot of Burlington, MA., as well as 13 nieces and nephews, 22 grand nieces and nephews and 4 great-grandnephews. Mr. Tourtellot attended The Citadel, Charleston, SC., and the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, Cambridge, MA., graduating with a BS degree in Civil Engineering. He was a registered engineer in seven states and was active as an officer in the local, state, and national levels of the American Society of Civil Engineers and also in the Consulting Engineers Council. Mr. Tourtellot had retired in 1974 as a Vice-President, Southern Division of Charles T. Main, after a long civil engineering career which took him all over the world to 42 countries on four continents. This included working with Crandell Dry Dock Engineers in Cambridge, MA., and in Canada for many years, designing and managing construction in shipyard around the world. Graveside funeral services will be held at 11:00 o'clock am on Saturday, August 4th, 2001 in the Evergreen Cemetery, 4426 Central Avenue, Charlotte, NC. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to The Huguenot Society of South Carolina, 138 Logan Street, Charleston, SC 29401.
