Swanson of Charleston, died at his residence. A memorial service will be held at 11 a.m., Monday, August 6, 2001, at the Guerry Chapel, Bishop Gadsden. Friends may call at 10:30 a.m., at Bishop Gadsden, prior to the service . Please make memorial contributions to Bishop Gadsden Residents Assistance Fund, 1 Gadsden Way, Charleston, S.C. 29412, or to a charity of one's choice.Mr. Swanson was born November 28, 1917, in Chicago, Ill., a son of Charles A. and Esther Breyfogle Swanson. He graduated from Crown Point High School in Indiana and attended Northwestern University. He retired from the State Ports Authority and has worked in the shipping industry in Chicago and Cleveland before moving to Charleston. Mr. Swanson honorable served his country during World War II as a member of the U.S. Navy in the Pacific Arena. He was an Eagle Scout, Sea Scout Master, member of the American Legion Post 147, Propeller Club and the Masons, as well as numerous civic and business associations. Mr. Swanson was an avid photographer and observer of nature. He was predeceased by a brother, John O. Swanson and a brother-in-law, Bob Cleveland. He is survived by his wife, Ferne P. Swanson of Charleston; two daughters, Mimi Swanson-Butler and her husband, Tom of Roanoke, Va., and Sally Swanson and her husband, Gary Wickboldt of Chicago, Ill.; one granddaughter, Sarah Elizabeth Gwaltney of Roanoke, Va.; three sisters, Edith S. Conquest and her husband Les of Crown Point, Marian S. Jollief and her husband Joe of Crown Point, Ind., and Thelma Swanson of Cape Coral, Fla.; one sister-in-law, Ann Swanson Peugh of Menomonee Falls, Wisc., and many nieces and nephews.
