TITLE: Lalon Grant SOURCE: The Keowee Courier SUBMITTED BY: Susan Brock-Booker FORMATTED BY: Kim Grissom, Jun 2003 *********************************************************************** GRANT, Lalon (1952-1964) Keowee Courier April 5, 1964 Flat Shoals Boy Fatally Dragged A mule started when some chickens flew out of a barn, killed a 12-year-old Flat Shoals community boy Monday afternoon by dragging the helpless youth almost a quarter of a mile before a rope broke to free him. Victim of the unusual tragedy was Lalon Grant, son of Mr. and Mrs. Faris Grant. Members of the family, horrified but unable to reach the scene in time, saw the animal break and run. Young Lalon had fastened a rope around the mule's neck and tied the other end around his waist. Just as they reached the barn, some chickens flew in front of the animal and it set off at a gallop. Sheriff D. H. Crenshaw said the youngster was dragged about 1,300 feet before the rope broke.
