Dec-1961, John Wesley Smith, 89, a resident of Sherwood Dr. died Friday at Oconee Memorial Hospital after several months illness. He was born in Oconee County a son of the late Rev. G.W. Smith and Mrs. Elizabeth Parker Smith. He was a retired farmer and was of the Baptist faith. He was first married to the late Florinda Smith and from this union the following survive: four sons, F.D. Smith of West Union, Walter Smith of Long Creek; Dover Smith and Rosser Smith, both of Walhalla and a daughter, Mrs. Dolly Rowland of Walhalla. His second marriage was to Mrs. Rachel J. Justus Smith, who survives him. Other survivors include three sons, Elbert Smith, Gentry Smith, and Frank Smith all of Walhalla; eight daughters, Mrs. Grace Phillips, Mrs. Kate Manley, Mrs. Laura Merrice and Mrs. Roxie Crumpton, all of Walhalla; Mrs. Isabell Towe of Salem; Mrs. Ida Nell Smith of West Union; Mrs. Edna Getsue and Mrs. Lou Ellen Clark both of Triangle, Va; a brother, Elbert Smith of Westminster; a sister, Mrs. Este Lee of Long Creek, 103 grandchildren; and several great-grandchildren. Funeral services were conducted Sunday from Southside Baptist Church with the Rev. Harold Mullikee and the Rev. Frank Rochester officiating. Burial was in West View Cemetery. Pallbearers: Lonnie Smith, Edward Smith, Brownie Smith, Dandy Smith Wesley Wilson, John P. Towe, Ralph Smith and Virgil Justus. Davenport Funeral Home was in charge.
