TITLE: Joseph Marcus Abbott SOURCE: The Keowee Courier SUBMITTED BY: Susan Brock-Booker FORMATTED BY: Kim Grissom, Jun 2003 *********************************************************************** ABBOTT, Joseph Marcus Joseph Marcus Abbott (8-29-1860 to 1953) Keowee Courier Pioneer Seneca Man Succumbs Funeral services for Joseph Marcus Abbott, 85, well known resident of Seneca, who died at his home Wednesday night following an illness of one month, were held from the Seneca Baptist church Friday. The Rev. J. Aubrey Estes conducted the services. Burial was in the family plot in Mt. View cemetery with Masons in charge of final rites at the graveside. Pallbearers were M. S. Lindsay, John O. Field, Marshall Cleveland, Roy D. Adams, E. B. Nimmons, Joe Cromer, William B. Hunnicutt, and W. C. Beaty. Members of the Seneca Masonic Lodge served as the escort of honor. Mr. Abbott was the son of the late Willis W. and Mariah Dawson Abbott. He was a member of the Seneca Baptist church and the Seneca Masonic Order. His wife, Mrs. Martha Jane Broome Abbott preceded him to the grave on August 9, 1949. Survivors include four daughters, Mrs. W. T. Tucker and Mrs. Roy Bryant of Atlanta, Ga., Mrs. Jewel Adams and Mrs. Sue Clayton both of Seneca; three sons, Forrest Abbott of Greenville, J. W. Abbott of Detroit, Mich., and Lloyd Abbott of the home; 13 grandchildren and five great-grandchildren.
