(1921-1944) Keowee Courier June 30, 1946, The body of Flight Officer Claude S. Knox, 23, of the U. S. Army Air Force arrived in Westminster Friday afternoon. Flight Officer Know was shot down over Italy on his 29th mission on March 11, 1944. He was a P-47 pilot. He had received the Purple Heart, and the Bronze Star with three clusters. He received his wings in November 1942 at the Mariana Air Base, in Mariana, Fla. A graduate of Westminster High school, he was engaged in farming prior to entering the service. He was a son of W. B. and Margie Martin Knox of near Westminster. He was born and reared near Westminster, and spent his entire life in this section. A descendant of pioneer families of Oconee county, he was a grandson of the late Joseph A. and Josephine Herndon Knox on his father's side. His maternal grandparents were the late Gary and Janie Burdette Martin. Besides his parents, he is survived by three brothers, Gary Knox of Batesburg, Sam J. Knox of Greenville and Ray Knox of Westminster; one sister, Miss Marie Knox of Perry Point, Md. He was a member of Mt. Tabor Baptist Church. Funeral services were held from the graveside in the First Baptist church cemetery Saturday morning at 11 o'clock. The Rev. M. J. Stansell and the Rev. Ernest Sorrells conducted the services. Pallbearers were T. C. Oliver, Aaron Oliver, Willie and Roy Ramey, Melton Sanders and Glenn Reynolds.
